A portrait must represent the person being painted. This is not as easy as it sounds. In order to show the person properly we need to think about location, clothing and facial expression. And it must also be an interesting painting. As a portrait artist I work mainly from photographs but I like to take these photos myself. You might love that holiday snap taken in Greece but will it make a good portrait? I also like to make some sketches. This process gives me a chance to get to know the person being painted and find out where they belong.
An alternative is to sit for a portrait. This takes time but one of my portrait sitters said: ‘Everyone should have their portrait painted by Monica’. She loved the conversations, the slow uncovering of character and personality. It is a gentle form of therapy and completely confidential.
